Grand Opening Season

A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The Performing Arts and Education Association of Southwest Iowa is extremely excited to present the Grand Opening Season, 2008-09. We will be moving into the Wilson Performing Arts Center by the end of the year, and all productions after January
1, 2009 will be in our new facility. The Wilson Performing Arts Center will have moved from a vision of community leadership to a reality.

The Grand Opening professional season offers four events in a season ticket, Hotel California, Keith Knight, Craicmore, and Joyce Yang. Two additional performances will be offered at individual ticket prices, Mammoth Follies and the Gala Grand Opening Event. In 2009, PAEA will also be offering for the first time community theatre productions. The PAEA Community Theatre Committee will produce two shows, one play and one musical, this year. In future seasons, there will be more productions
and performances.

Again, we wish to express our appreciation to each of you for supporting the PAEA mission to increase and enhance performing arts and arts education for southwest Iowa. We are certain that you will enjoy the Grand Opening Season, and we
look forward to seeing you at the performances.

Sincerely,
Larry Brandstetter,
PAEA Board President

KEITH KNIGHT
Saturday, November 15th
7:30 PM
Red Oak Middle School
Keith Knight is a solo 12 & 6 string fingerstyle acoustic guitarist, vocalist, and mandolinist, and is considered by many to be one of the finest finger picking guitarists in America. He has been performing across the United States since 1993. Keith’s high-energy guitar wizardry takes modern and traditional folk music to incredible heights. His music is deeply rooted in Appalachian, ragtime & delta blues, and Americana music; and with his modern guitar techniques and spirited vocals, Keith breathes new life into these traditional music genres. His influences span from Blind Blake and Leadbelly to Leo Kottke and Ry Cooder. He has shared the stage with such great artists as Melanie, the Smothers Brothers, Scott Ainslie, and many other national acts.

CRAICMORE
Saturday, March 7th
7:30 PM
Wilson Performing Arts Center

Craicmore plays contemporary traditional Celtic music. With deep roots in the music of Scotland and Ireland, this group features the critically acclaimed vocalist Nancy Johnston. Her deep, rich, contralto voice is rare in the genre. Driving rhythms from guitar, bass, Bohdran drum, conga and other percussion, along with high-spirited whistles, flutes and bagpipes, powerfully render jigs & reels. Four part harmony, rhythmic hardshoe dancing, an East Indian Shruti Box and rumbling Didgeridoo all accent the warmth and passion of Craicmore’s fiery performances. Don’t miss the chance to experience the excitement, the humor and the sheer joy of this music from Craicmore. “Celtic music that touches the heart, mind, and soul.”

mundi usa label. The youngest of the Cliburn Competition’s participants, she was the recipient of both the Steven De Groote Memorial Award for the Best Performance of Chamber Music, as well as the Beverley Taylor Smith Award for the Best Performance of a New Work. Of her spectacular finish at one of the world’s most prestigious

Additional Performances
MAMMOTH FOLLIES
Saturday, October 11th
1:00 PM
Atlantic High School
Mammoth Follies explores the wonders of the age of dinosaurs in an old-fashioned revue of original songs, witty jokes, and earth-smashing dances performed by giant dinosaur puppets. This program will dramatize historic and scientific facts (as well as some myths) about the great age of the dinosaur. Enormous puppets populate the stage, including your host Willie Mammoth, Smiley the Saber-Toothed Tiger, Bessie the 27-foot long Apatosaurus, Tony and Trixie Triceratops, Terry the Pterodactyl, and the 11-foot tall T. Rex in a musical trip through pre-history. Hudson Vagabond Puppets create larger-than-life puppetry and mask programs designed to fit into the school curriculum as well as to entertain children and their families.

GALA SWINGIN’ BENNY
GOODMAN SONGBOOK

Saturday, March 28th
7:00 PM
Wilson Performing Arts Center

Join us for a celebration of the Wilson Performing Arts Center and a tribute to the wonderful era of swing music. A Cocktail Party will begin at 7:00 PM, and the Benny Goodman Songbook concert will follow at 8:00 PM.

Celebrate the magic of classic jazz and especially how Benny Goodman’s clarinet and vocalists help shape and define the 1930’s swing era. His versions of popular standards and dance music, powerful and exciting then, still captivate us now. This upbeat, toe-tapping show features Terry Blaine’s exuberant vocals, the elegant stride mastery of pianist, Mark Shane, and hot swing playing of acclaimed clarinetist, Alan Vache’. An exciting evening you will long remember.

All I Really Need
to Know I Learned
in Kindergarten

February 19-22,
February 26-March 1

Based on a book of short essays by Robert Fulghum, first published in 1986. The title of the book is taken from the first essay in the volume, in which Fulghum lists lessons normally learned in American kindergarten classrooms and explains how the world would be improved if adults adhered to the same basic rules as children, i.e. sharing, being kind to one another, cleaning up after themselves, and living “a balanced life” of work, play, and learning. Over nearly two decades, the title essay, “All I Really Need To Know I Learned in Kindergarten,” has spawned countless parodies involving television shows, movies, books, and other phenomena.

“Heartwarming, charming, funny, and touching. The stories are about all of us.” - National Public Radio

The Sound of Music
June 4-7,
and June 11-14

“The Hills are alive with the Sound of Music...,” as the PAEA Community Theatre presents this wonderful family favorite musical. The Sound of Music features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse. It is based on the memoir of Maria Von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Songs from the musical that have become standards include “The Sound of Music,” “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” and “Do-Re-Mi.” The original Broadway production opened in November 1959, and was made into an Academy-award winning 1965 movie musical.

The Sound of Music was the final musical written by Rodgers and Hammerstein; Hammerstein died of cancer nine months after
the premiere
